I would tell people that I knew Japanese and would just repeat watakshi wa desu then make up japanese sounding words. Then we went to junior high and there was a japanese girl who I tried to speak ‘her language’. She outed me to everyone because she thought I was making fun of her.

Artists Are Showing Their Support for Grape-kun x Hululu
Grape-kun x Hululu has quickly become the greatest love story of our time. What started as a simple promotion between Tobu Zoo and Kemono Friends escalated into a romance between a penguin and a cardboard cutout.

Image via Twitter
The bizarre and unexpected love between Grape-kun and Hululu has lead to fan artists drawing their support for Grape-kun, because who wouldn’t feel something for the senior penguin? Even Chikuka Ikuko, the voice of Hululu, visited Grape-kun and expressed her concern for him once the cutout is removed in June.
For now, let’s savor this forbidden love.

In Appreciation of Arby’s Nerdiness
For a few weeks now, we’ve been falling in love with Wendy and her smug face. She’s become so popular that she has reached peak meme status and will now forever be known as a sassy waifu.
Community reception has been mixed – some embracing our new Smug Overlord while some are less accepting of the meme. Out of the cesspool that is the Facebook comments section, a community member’s two cents caught my attention:
I have to agree with these comments. Arby’s has always been on point and vocal about being nerds and otakus and it’s about time we show them some love as well! Here are ten of my favorite instances when Arby’s was just a huge nerd.

So thank you, Arby’s! We salute you!

Nintendo Reveals ARMS Character And People Are SHOOK
Nintendo held an ARMS-focused Nintendo Direct yesterday where they unveiled new details about their motion-controlled fighter game for the Switch.
They featured customization, multiplayer mode, and a Global Test Punch demo during during the weekends of May 26-28 and June 2-4. But none of that is important to us right now because we have our priorities straight.

The only thing that’s important is Twintelle. The perfect girl: she’s a beauty, she has hair drills, she’s #THICC, and she looks like she can punch you through a wall without breaking a sweat.

“The Crawling City” Writer Launches Ambitious Community-based Project
Since September of last year, people have been in love with the fantastically drawn, goth-inspired and tentacle-filled indie manga, The Crawling City. It is an ongoing 4-koma title drawn by Paroro and written by Merryweather, both huge anime fans.

Just a few days ago, Merry began a new and ambitious project on the Tapas website: Readers Quest.
Inspired by choose-your-own-adventure stories and Twitch Plays Pokemon, we spoke to Merryweather about his new creation.
“Many times on websites like Tapas, people have tried to do a reader inclusive project, by usually giving the readers the option to vote whether the hero turns left or goes right, or whether he fights or flees.” said Merry in our interview.

“My intention is to create a comic where the Readers aren’t simply given a choice between two options, but rather the completely liberal choice of what they want the main character to do, with no limits.”
He explained to us the very simple rules: Tapas has a system that allows comments to be voted up or down. Anyone reading the comic can suggest what the Hero should do at the start of the next episode. The following week, the comment with the most upvotes will compel the Hero to do the action.

“The comic becomes a perpetual cliffhanger of what crazy thing the Readers will think of next, and the world’s reaction to an absolute madman hero [commanded] by forces beyond his control.”
You can read and participate in Reader’s Quest over at the Tapas website and you can follow Merry on Deviantart, Taptastic, and Twitter.
MultiFacet: Fighting Radicalization With Anime
Back in October 2016, we covered Nadir Shirazi’s MultiFacet, an anime project about a world with a single water source. We caught up with Nadir in this exclusive interview to see how the MultiFacet project is doing after last year’s feature article.
Kryz: Hey Nadir! How has the project progressed so far?
Nadir: It’s doing great! And thanks to the collaboration of Paul Wollenzien, Nancy Nor, and Fraeya Pinto (my Co-Creators and Animators) this fictional world is looking scarily similar to our own and is beginning to connect more with people.
Since last year’s feature article, it’s started to pick up steam and we’ve been getting more questions on what the series is about.
Kryz: I’ve been meaning to ask that as well. How has the plot developed from last year?
Nadir: We decided to focus on the fact that it is set in “Dunya”, a world divided between extreme forms of religion and secularism.
There are two opposing factions who want to control Dunya’s last water source, and both of them have extremist members in their groups who cause havoc. Then you have the titular MultiFacet who are trying to keep a middle ground but barely succeeding.
Kryz: That is definitely an interesting story. What will set this apart from other indie anime that are tackling real-world issues?
Nadir: I think what will set MultiFacet apart from other series is there are no real villains and heroes. The four main characters each have unique viewpoints and their own solutions for Dunya’s problems.
You have Shabina who is furiously trying to keep the two factions from each other’s throats. You have Arsin from one faction who has a complicated relationship with the extremist Fanata. Billen from the other faction who has let the extremist Ultrere flourish. And then you have Rydin who wants the established systems abolished to try to reunite his brothers.
Being a “Protagonist” is just a matter of perspective.

Kryz: Your plot has evolved to include people of different beliefs, all thinking they are the good guys, and how they are facing the threat of extremism. The answer is obvious but I still have to ask for clarity’s sake, where are you pulling inspiration from?
Nadir: These characters and the world of Dunya all stem out of my internal conflict between my own Canadian secular identity and my Islamic religious one post 9/11. It’s not a series about Muslims, but it is made by one who has spent his adult life working with people from literally every faith and non-faith value system out there.
That tragic day has sort of created a vicious cycle where every-day-Muslims and their allies globally (but especially in Western countries) are forced to defend themselves physically and psychologically from both Islamophobes and groups like ISIS. These two groups claim to hate one another yet the only people they attack are the non-extreme innocent people in the middle.
The series is about reclaiming real life narrative from extremists on both sides. It’s about those of us who ask ourselves if it is possible to “Stay the Middle?” and not join in on this cycle of hate.
Kryz: So you’ve decided to tell your story, and the story of a lot of Muslims and people of color, through anime.
Nadir: Yes. I quit a successful career working on multi-faith issues in public life to follow my passion as a lifelong nerd and anime fan and to have a bigger impact. It is in a somewhat timely moment my team finds itself in. Anime culture inspired by Japan has never been hotter globally.
Kryz: There are a lot of criticism involved in making anime-inspired projects outside of Japan, how are you going to deal with that?
Nadir: My team and I have decided to work on a different form of anime that I think we are at the forefront of. I call it LITE Anime.
It is anime-inspired but will ultimately look different in that it will experiment in storytelling mediums versus being just animated. We can tell one part of the story first in the traditional animated form then continue in other cheaper mediums like sound, motion comics, writing, etc. An interactive transmedia experience.
I am part of a new group of people who are trying to make anime, despite the fact that there is no multimillion-dollar budget for the project and also despite the fact that there will be purists who will look down on any anime that’s not produced in Japan.
Kryz: You have just launched a Kickstarter for MultiFacet. Do you have a message for the community at GoBoiano to support your project?
Nadir: The purpose of the Kickstarter is to have people help me fund the first mixed media chapter of the story so it can be released online for FREE. In the past years crowdfunding has all been dominated by larger companies who use it as a store front. Let’s go back to crowdfunding’s indie roots and let’s get this chapter off the ground for everyone!
Especially if you are a Millennial nerd of diversity, someone who likes fantasy action-adventure anime, fans of western shows like the Legend of Korra, and if you’d like to take back the true meaning of crowdfunding: MultiFacet is a project that could help fight radicalization and impact the real world.
Thank you for the exclusive Nadir! If you like Nadir’s work and would like to support him, check out the Kickstarter!

How Great Anime Shaped Us Into Who We Are
As I was scrolling through Twitter, an interesting tweet by GoBoiano caught my eye. It was a chart of the waifu wars throughout the years. Not only did it make me nostalgic for the anime of years past, but a comment also reminded me of how important anime is in influencing us as people.
With all of the amazing lessons it has to offer I say I am proud to have grown up watching anime.
— Yendor E Sniktaw (@sniktaw014) July 4, 2017
This comment made me think of an old, and now-deleted post by the Tumblr blog “Everything is Ordinary“, which points out the lessons they’ve learned from the iconic Fullmetal Alchemist series. Which, I’m sure, a lot of you will be able to relate to – if not for FMA, maybe for another series.
What I learned from Fullmetal Alchemist:
Good people do bad things:
Good and evil are subjective:
Sometimes those you trust the most will hurt you the worst:
Bad things happen to good people:
Even those you love can die:
Life isn’t fair:
You can’t get something for nothing:
Don’t judge people by their outward appearance:
Don’t give up. Even when things are hard:
Don’t forget the people who helped you get where you are:
Hatred will destroy you:
People can change:
There are two sides to every story:
Even your enemies have feelings:
When the world is crashing down around you, it is okay to laugh:
… or cry:
Family comes in all shapes and sizes:
Big things come in small packages:
The truth is sometimes more frightening than you hoped:
Beauty can hide great strength:
Crying is not a weakness:
Expect the unexpected:
Sometimes you have to make a sacrifice in order to move forward:
Learn from your past. Don’t forget your mistakes:
I believe anime deserves more credit on how much it has influenced our lives. What anime series has shaped you as a person? And what lessons have you learned from anime?
RWBY Volume 5 Premiere Date Announced
The official RWBY Facebook page posted an announcement today, revealing the 5th volume’s premiere date
October 14th is still a quarter of a year away, but fans are already super hyped and excited for the continuation of the story.
In addition to the date reveal, Rooster Teeth also announced three new character shorts to air before the volume premiere. Fan speculation about the character shorts point to them either being about a resolution for the side characters Jaune, Ren and Nora or a catch-up series for Blake, Weiss and Yang that will transition smoothly to Volume 5’s first episode.
RWBY is a future-fantasy anime series created by Monty Oum and produced by Rooster Teeth Productions. It has 52 released episodes since its first launch in 2013, with episodes running from 4 to 28 minutes. The story follows Hunters as they battle the mysterious creatures of destruction called Grimm and other forces that seek to take control of the world.
Are you excited for the new RWBY volume?

Popular Youtuber Undertakes Ambitious Poll
The popular anime Youtuber Joey, more commonly known as The Anime Man, released a video about a week ago covering the top anime of all time (according to Japan), and as he states it – “it’s a whole bunch of WTF”.
These kinds of polls are common in Japan. You can usually find them on fan sites like Akiba Souken and Anime! Anime!, and due to the difference in culture and attitudes toward the medium, the results are often different from what international fans expect. This led The Anime Man to publish a follow-up video simply titled “I Need Your Help.”
He has made his own poll for the Top 100 Anime of All Time, focusing more on the community outside of Japan. The poll aims to be “the biggest anime poll that’s ever been created.” The video reminds everyone that he’s trying to make this a legitimate poll and advises everyone to steer clear of the Boku no Pico and Cory in the House jokes.
Though we often release our own polls here on GoBoiano, and other anime sites have their surveys as well, most of the time the answers are limited to each site’s own audience and community and are not representative of the entire international anime audience as a whole.
Depending on how many people respond to this poll, this might be a record-setting first in the anime community outside Japan.
The poll will be up for about a month and The Anime Man advises you to share it with as many people as you can!

A.I. Automatically Generates Moe Girls Right on Your Browser
Artificial Intelligence is not a new topic of discussion for the anime community. We’ve had anime producers say that the future of anime is with Artificial Intelligence, researchers developing programs that make the animation smoother and, of course, who could forget our glorious overlord Motoko.

But outside of abusive chat A.I., the programs that rely on Artificial Intelligence are usually out of reach for your everyday otaku. That all changes with the website make.girls.moe
The website is created by @namaniku0 and their team. The A.I. generates customized anime characters based on your personal preferences. The project was made for anime fans who have no skill in drawing but have character ideas or to assist artists in coming up with new concepts and inspiration.
The A.I. works by pulling from a database of thousands of character sheets of anime games. It learns what features they have (hair style and color, smile, accessories) and how the human artists put these features together to make an appealing character.

The website is easy and intuitive to use. Simply pick out the features of the moe girl you want and keep clicking “Generate” until you land on a character that you would risk your life to protect.

Share with us in the comments the moe girls you’ve created at make.girls.moe! Here’s mine, after a few tries:

Full Russian Alchemist Creates Homunculus
Anime isn’t really real…yet…though scientists are making them real, one by one.

So one man, a Russian Home Alchemist named Korney, decided to make a Homunculus.

Yep, Homunculus. A real one…and it’s alive.
I did my research and here’s a brief explanation of homunculus:
Homunculus means “Little Man” in Latin. It was first created by a German Alchemist named Theophrastus von Hohenheim in the 16th Century. Basically, a homunculus is born when a human sperm meets an animal egg. Alchemist Korney recreated that experiment, using human sperm and a chicken egg.
“But weight! Isn’t it a hybrid of two different species supposed to be called a ‘chimera’? You know…Nina and Alex?”
Well, yes and no. In the anime logic, Nina and Alex are called a human chimera formed by human transmutation, and a homunculus is brought into existence through forbidden alchemy.
In real-life logic, chimeras are a result of a mutation in the zygote stage and a homunculus is brought into existence by mixing human sperm and animal egg. While both sound very different, they have the same concept of crossbreeding.

This is the first Homunculus video he made. Here he explained how to make a homunculus. He also showed the homunculus he created. He later explained in the next episode that the first homunculus died because it was weak.
It’s actually a documentary series, and I don’t really want to spoil you on what happened on the later videos…

But his last upload is on August 1, 2017, where the Homunculi he made started to spit something (he thinks is either acid or feces) after he was feeding it with meat slathered in HUMAN BLOOD.
You know very well what Full Metal Alchemist has taught us when it comes to Human Transmutation and Human Alchemy…
Here is the link to his Homunculi playlist. Keep in note that he’s a Russian, so the language is Russian, but we have translators that translated what he says to English. Just keep the captions turned on.
About the discussion, I don’t really know what to ask, so I just want your opinions. Is this real life? Is this just fantasy? Or it was just actually Dio?
Why Did Rapper XXXtentacion Turn into Chrollo from Hunter x Hunter?
Can we talk about rapper XXXtentacion turning into Chrollo on Instagram?
So how did we get here? Why are we comparing XXXtentacion with anime? Well, let’s backtrack to a time when he still had eyebrows.
XXXTentacion (also known as ‘X’) is a Florida based rapper that came into popularity on Soundcloud, however, he didn’t reach the mainstream until the release of his hit song ‘Look at Me’ that has about 95 million plays.
The fanbase following XXXtentacion is as infamous as him. Fans are constantly repurposing his music with anime such as Dragonball Z, 5 Centimeters Per Second, and The Garden of Words to name a few. These videos get a massive amount of traffic. Just these two videos have 9 million views and 14 million views respectively on YouTube.
It’s a weird and dark rabbit hole that plunges into 4chan levels of insanity with many videos reaching millions of views and some fans creating completely original content – once again proving the creativity of the anime community.
It’s no surprise that a large part of his community are fans of anime, which you can see in the comment sections of his videos. After the 2017 XXL Freshman Cipher, fans decided to get creative with roasting him because of his off-the-wall freestyle.
And when X was in Jail for a short period of time, fans were blasting “Free X” all over his social media pages, including his MyAnimeList profile. Yes, he has a MAL profile.
So why exactly did X take on this crazy new look? He recently posted his reasoning online.
“HUMANS FEAR WHAT THEY DON’T UNDERSTAND ALWAYS AND FOREVER. “ISN’T CLEAR THAT I DON’T GIVE A F***. IF YOU FEEL AS IF YOUR PHYSICAL IDENTITY HAS TO BE THE SAME AS EVERYONE ELSE JUST BE SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE THEN YOUR STUPID. BE YOURSELF.”
It’s a really positive message from a rapper who often is ostracized for not fitting in with the rap crowd. But X seems happy to not fit in as long as he gets to be a weeb – whether intentionally or not.

China’s Largest Anime Service is Raising U.S. Money
Bilibili, China’s most popular online anime streaming service, is making a play to raise money from U.S. investors through an IPO. The streaming site has about 300 million users. So their user base is just slightly less than the entire population of the U.S. That puts Bilibili near Twitter, which is sitting at 320 million users in 2017.
According to Bloomberg and their anonymous sources, bilibili is looking to get listed on the New York Stock Exchange next year. Earlier this year, anonymous sources told Bloomberg that Chinese streaming service iQiYi was looking for American investment, and they have since made a licensing deal with Netflix.
If bilibili’s aim is entering the U.S. streaming market, it would have a huge impact on the current landscape. Since 2015, the streaming service has spent big and licensed more than 300 anime titles for the Chinese market. They have also help produced about 20 anime productions, including Space Patrol Luluco and Akiba’s Trip: The Animation. Bilibili streams their own homegrown Chinese animation (donghua) and user content.
It is possible that bilibili is only seeking U.S. investors so that they could bring American anime-style content over to China or to bolster their own war chest in China’s increasing licensing spending spree. According to The Association of Japanese Animators, the Chinese market was responsible for more than half of international revenue for the anime industry in 2016 with bilibili being a market leader.
Bilibili didn’t respond to Bloomberg for comment.
Anime Fans Are Making Their Favorite Characters Using Emojis

Woman Faces Lawsuit After Selling Boyfriend’s Valuable Anime
Gunma Prefectural Police arrested a 23-year-old woman for stealing and selling her boyfriend’s anime. She reportedly stole 8 anime sets that were worth 90,000 yen ($810) from her 49-year-old boyfriend and sold them to a shop.

Twitter user @wkkazuya claims to be the victim and Tweeted a picture of empty spaces on his collection shelf. He says that it isn’t a joke and that some of the stolen sets were unopened limited printed copies.
Some of the more valuable anime that were stolen included Sora no Manimani, Darker Than Black, True Tears, and Android Kikaider. The police report stated that Magical Lyrical Nanoha and Fullmetal Alchemist were also stolen from him.

According to @wkkazyua, his girlfriend had quit her job and was staying with him after she was expelled from her previous housing. He also says that she threatened to steal his anime before and believes that she has stolen from him in the past. The girlfriend has already admitted to the theft, citing the lack of money as motivation.
Police were able to collect the stolen anime from a local shop, but the valuable unopened sets have already been opened. @wkkazuya is currently seeking damages and will employ a lawyer.

However, he says that there is a silver lining. His beloved copies of Tokyo Pig and Azuki-chan are safe since they are stored in a different room. He believes that Azuki-chan is extremely valuable.
How Net Neutrality Could Change Anime Streaming and Piracy
Overall, the repeal of Net Neutrality would affect Internet access for U.S. users and U.S. companies who would have to deal with higher costs for the data they currently use. Net Neutrality affects anime fans of all types due to its potential effect on streaming sites’ prices, access to HD streams, and illegal or unlicensed anime and manga sites could be blocked.
The vote on Net Neutrality is December 14th so if this affects you – consider calling on your local representative to support Net Neutrality.

Net neutrality is the belief that internet service providers (ISP), like AT&T and Verizon, cannot intentionally block, slow down, or charge you extra money to visit certain websites.
Net neutrality was established February 2015 when the government reclassified the internet as “telecommunication service,” protecting it under the Communications Act of 1934. Prior to this, certain ISPs were found guilty of malicious practices in the early to mid-2000s.
- Comcast secretly slowed access to peer-to-peer file sharing websites
- Madison River Communications prevented subscribers from using Vonage for internet calls
- AT&T added restrictions to Apple’s FaceTime service if you didn’t pay an additional fee
- Verizon was caught throttling Netflix and Youtube connection speeds.
Net neutrality makes those practices illegal.

ISPs, especially the big-name ones, feel that net neutrality is unnecessary government regulation.
Opponents of net neutrality also argue that heavy data offerings like video streaming is more expensive to maintain server-side than text-based information and users should pay for that. If you view the internet as an expressway, slower moving trucks (video streaming, gif-heavy sites) would have their own slow lane, while standard vehicles (most websites) have their own lanes. People willing to pay more can drive on a dedicated express lane.

Net neutrality advocates have also used other non-net neutrality countries as a warning. One viral Tweet showcased a piecemeal practice from Portuguese ISP Meo. They offer “deals” that cut the internet into segments.
Another worry is that certain websites will be blocked for having dissenting, immoral, or political content. There is currently a lawmaker campaigning in Kentucky on a platform to ban internet pornography, which is something ISPs could make difficult to access without net neutrality.
Okay, but How Does This Affect Anime?
Your waifus will be stolen away and you can no longer indulge in hentai! But at least you wouldn’t be able to watch shit anime, so that’s good.
But in all seriousness, legal streaming sites may raise their subscription prices to cover their new ISP bill or you could be charged to have high-quality streaming. Exclusive deals with ISPs and mobile providers may happen too.
For example, Crunchyroll is part of Ellation, which is a subsidiary owned by AT&T and Chernin Group. Verizon could throttle access to the site since they are a part of AT&T, or Ellation could sign exclusive deals with other carriers to allow unlimited streaming on Crunchyroll instead of a competitor’s service.
Another possibility, if you look at other non-net neutrality countries, is that ISPs will introduce a streaming package to allow you high-speed streaming. Without it, you’ll be stuck with slow speeds and sub-HD video quality.
And pirates shouldn’t think they’ll walk away unscathed. Without net neutrality, ISPs could block your access to illegal sites and prevent you from torrenting. Such sites can pop-up again, but it’ll be easy for your ISP to flip the switch to block it.
When Will Net Neutrality’s Fate be Decided?![Anime Anime]()
A Congressional vote will be held on December 14, 2017.
