How Ugandan Knuckles Originated from a Film and Evolved into a Meme

$

The Internet is currently obsessed with Ugandan Knuckles, a meme involving a wonky looking Knuckles who protects/spits on anime “queens” while clicking their tongue. It’s taken over comment threads, VRChat, and social media to the confusion of many.

Knuckles Origin Story

The parody image of Knuckles was created by Gregzilla for his review of Sonic Lost World, and first gave rise to the “Knuckles Sings” meme. Shortly after, Deviantart user tidiestflyer created a 3D model on Gregzilla’s drawing, which has become a popular avatar on VRChat.

Ugandan Knuckles

Ugandan Influence

What does Knuckles have to do with Uganda? You have to hop on over to Twitch, specifically to Forsen’s fanbase. Forsen is popular Swedish streamer known for playing Hearthstone and Player Unkown’s Battlegrounds. His fanbase loves spamming Ugandan memes while playing Player Unkown’s Battlegrounds, which some say is offensive and mocks Ugandan culture.

The Ugandan Knuckles phrases are related to the film Who Killed Captain Alex? This Ugandan produced action-comedy movie is notorious for its broken English lines, with the phrase “do you know the way?” being the most popular.

Going Viral in VRChat

VRChat user Gaztons combined the two memes and gave rise to the Ugandan Knuckles that has gone viral. Basically, he uses the avatar to recruit players to join his “tribe.” While some players to make humor videos using the Ugandan Knuckles model, most groups gather around to shout “you do not know the way” and make clicking noises to protect a queen – usually an anime girl like Kanna from Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid.

VRChat was quickly overtaken by anime girls during its launch but now Ugandan Knuckles has stolen the limelight. Certain servers ban and block Ugandan Knuckles players.

Now the meme is making the jump into the real world through cosplayers discovering “the whey”.

Whether you think it’s obnoxious, funny, or offensive, Ugandan Knuckles has taken over a large number of communities and seems to be the first major meme of 2018.

Earth-chan is the internet’s latest waifu and meme queen.

Earth-chan

A simple joke from Trinimmortal alluding to Flat Earth believers and anime tropes has escalated into fans drawing Earth as an anime girl who has to constantly defend that she is not flat.

The Internet has been overtaken with each artist adding their own style to Earth-chan.

‘BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle’ Gets Backlash Over Planned DLC

Since their announcement last year at Evo 2017, fans have been excited for Arc System Works’ latest installment in the popular Blazblue franchise.

‘BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle’ combines the cast of multiple fighting game series — BlazBlue, Persona 4 Arena and Under Night In-Birth. It will also include characters from RWBY, Rooster Teeth’s anime-style web series.

Clockwise from top: Ruby Rose (RWBY), Yu Narukami (Persona 4 Arena), Hyde (Under Night In-Birth), and Ragna the Bloodedge (BlazBlue)

Cross Tag Battle is going to be a 2D fighting game, in an era where most of its competitors are using 3D cel-shaded models. Being a four-way crossover of popular franchises, fighting game aficionados were understandably hyped.

That is until last Saturday when Arc System Works announced that there will be 20 DLC characters for Cross Tag Battle. This caused controversy and backlash from the fans as this decision effectively halves the game’s 40-character roster.

There will be a total of six DLC sets, containing 3 characters each, and two standalone DLC characters – the first one was recently revealed to be RWBY’s Blake Belladonna.

Community reaction on social media was mostly negative, some pointing out how this feels like Arc System Works stripping the game of content just to nickel-and-dime the gamers.

What are your thoughts on the developer’s decision to have half the roster be DLC?

BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle launches in Japan on May 31st and in North America on June 5th for the Playstation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Otaku Coin: A Cryptocurrency for Anime Fans is in Development

With the recent spike in popularity of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Ripple, it was only a matter of time before the allure of this technology and its potential reached influencers in the anime industry. Enter – the “Otaku Coin.”

Otaku Coin

The online anime store, Tokyo Otaku Mode, is jumping on the cryptocurrency hype train. They are developing the new currency “Otaku Coin”, which the company hopes to eventually circulate through the anime, manga, and games industries.

Tokyo Otaku Mode wants to use blockchain technology to bridge the gap between the community and the creators. In brief, their plan is to allow fans to earn Otaku Coin by watching anime, sharing content and creating reviews. By participating and contributing to the anime community, fans would earn currency which can then be used to attend events, purchase products and directly support projects and creators.

Anime Community Cryptocurrency

This gives fans a lot more say in what anime, manga, and games get produced and gives creators a lot more financial freedom to pursue the projects that they want to make.

The Otaku Coin project is overseen by Tokyo Otaku Mode co-founders and advised by big names in the industry like producer Taro Maki, Oculus founder Palmer Luckey, and journalist Tadashi Sudo. The official Otaku Coin Ambassador is Virtual Youtuber Kizuna Ai.

The Otaku Coin cryptocurrency is planned to launch Summer 2018.

Artists Keep Making Clorox-Chan & Tide Pod-chan Because They Want Us to Die

We are living in a golden age of personifications! Everywhere we turn, artists are turning objects, mythical creatures, and planets into cute anime girls.

https://yung-godxo.tumblr.com/post/169547992931/please-dont-eat-us-if-you-dont-want-go-to

The latest sensation takes a dark turn with Clorox-chan and Tide Pod-chan, both of which are associated with bleach drinking. While both adorable characters are closely linked, they have different origins.

Who is Tide Pod-Chan?

Most young, hip internet users are familiar with the Tide Pod challenge, which involves popping a detergent packet in your mouth. No, most of the “challengers” are not suicidal. Despite most Tide Pod challenge videos being parodies, the U.S Poison Control Center reported that 55 teens intentional ate detergent packets in 2017 – their reasons were not reported.

Now, let’s back to Tide Pod-chan! As part of a joke, Instagram user shared a drawing of her on January 1, 2018 with a “do not eat” warning.

Azumi would cosplay as Tide Pod-chan a day later.

Naturally, the internet pounced on Tide Pod-chan like a pack of hungry children at a laundromat:

Man, that looks delicious…I wish I had a tasty beverage to wash that packet down with…

Meet Clorox-chan

Bleach drinking is commonly used internet adage that describes a person’s displeasure with something. Watched Boku no Pico? Better reach for the bleach. Hunter x Hunter is on hiatus again? Better sip on some bleach! Someone likes something you hate? BLEACH FOR MY ENEMIES!! You get the point.

Artist Kuma Artsu gave Clorox an anime makeover, with the sultry Clorox-chan wondering why people keep trying to drink her.

And what do you know, Pervychu Alice cosplayed as Clorox-chan the next day!

Other artists gave Clorox-chan a darker twist, depicting her as a sadist luring you to a painful death.

Cute Anime Girl Youtuber is Secretly a Middle-Aged Otaku Man

Japanese vloggers are no stranger to hiding their identities from fans. For years it was common to keep faces off-camera and to alter one’s voice. So it’s not surprising to see an increase of virtual Youtubers thanks to inexpensive motion-sensing software that can instantly convert body movement into an avatar.

Most virtual Youtubers are cute anime girls, with Kizuna Ai and Kaguya Luna being the most popular examples. Who doesn’t love a wacky and mentally unstable waifu?

One of the newest virtual Youtubers is Nora Cat, who debuted last December. Her gothic dress, cat ears, and soft-spoken voice are aimed at otaku who love watching cute anime girls chat about video games. In fact, she’s gained over 55 thousand followers so far!

Nora Cat once famously proclaimed, “If you want to fall in love with a virtual character, then you should. I won’t betray those feeling. If everyone feels attracted to me, I will continue to be attractive, so it’s ok.”

One of Nora Cat’s gimmicks are live streams; most of her competitors are pre-recorded. However, a brief technical glitch during a stream revealed Nora Cat’s true identity:

Nora Cat

A middle-aged guy is disguised as an otaku waifu!

Even more shocking is that the unintentional masking has led to an increase in followers! New and old fans have expressed more interesting in watching Nora Cat’s videos in a “kabuki theater” type fashion. Commentors are pleasantly surprised that a middle-aged man is able to convincingly play the role of a cute anime girl.

Others say that the reveal doesn’t kill their fantasy and it’s no different from a male artist drawing cute girls in manga. The digital filters are more than enough to mask any connection between the creator and Nora Cat.

Also, some people just don’t care that it’s a guy playing Nora Cat.

Fans have also been flooding Twitter with new fan art based on Nora Cat, signaling that an otaku guy is fine too.

Life, Death, and Scam Accusations of the Flying Colors Anime Census

The Youtube and Twitter anime communities have been abuzz in the past two weeks. A California-based nonprofit, Flying Colors Foundation (FCF), officially launched, hit the ground running with an ambitious anime census, and closed down — all within two weeks.

Flying Colors Foundation Logo
When they launched we immediately talked with Daniel Suh, the man in charge of the foundation’s Finance and Operations, to shed some light on what FCF was all about. At the time, nobody expected how quickly everything would come crashing down.

This is a developing story with many different sides to it. We’ll focus on the main developments that are currently public. More information is coming to light daily and it seems that as of today the FCF Twitter is now private and their website has been suspended by their hosting provider.

In summary, we’ll be covering:

  • How FCF started and the ideas behind it
  • The inspiration for the 2018 Anime Census
  • The scandals and revelations brought forward by the community
  • FCF responses and subsequent shutdown

So strap in and get ready because the past two weeks have been a wild ride.

The Unrepresented West

According to their official website, the Flying Colors Foundation was trying to give the Western audience representation in the Japanese focused anime industry.

Daniel shared, “We met with Gigguk [at Anime Expo 2017] and the conversation led to the question of why there was no organization to represent the Western audience.” Coincidentally, a month after Anime Expo, the popular Youtuber Joey, The Anime Man, released the survey for The Top 100 Anime Series of All Time, and the people behind the foundation saw an opportunity.

The group behind FCF, the foundation not yet officially launched at the time, collaborated with Joey to help him analyze and publish the results of his survey. Daniel noted, “The survey did extremely well and our team was convinced that this is what the online community truly wanted – a chance to express themselves”.

Gunning for a Sequel

With the success of The Anime Man’s survey, FCF launched their own ambitious census. The 2018 Anime Census aimed to reach more than 50,000 participants and get 10 million data points.

Looking at the people involved, this did not seem to be a far-fetched idea at the time. The foundation was backed by popular ‘Anitubers’ who helped promote the FCF survey to their fans.

Flying Colors Foundation Youtubers / Influencers
FCF claimed multiple times that no Anituber influencer was compensated in any way during this process, although later investigations revealed that to be not entirely true as influencers spoke out.

A Scandal at Dawn

It was about a week after the official launch of Flying Colors Foundation when rumors and negative press started to hound the organization. Most notable of these was an in-depth article by socialanigirl, Alicia Haddick, posing the question “Is the Flying Colors Foundation a Scam?”

The article pointed out that one of the staff, Francisco Lee, used to work for Loot Crate and Disney as Consumer Insight and Data Analyst.

Flying Colors Foundation Staff
This sparked a fear that the 2018 non-profit Anime Census was made for the sole purpose of data harvesting and selling analytics to companies. Finding a previous connection between Gigguk, the founders, and the for-profit company Otaku Pin Club only added fuel to the fire.

Other concerns were voiced about the lack of team transparency, intrusive census questions about mental health and income, and questionable donated profits. FCF promised to donate their profits to other non-profits but also said that they would donate to a for-profit company. It’s clearly illegal for a non-profit to give revenue they earned through donations or other non-taxable income to a for-profit company, which raised questions if the team behind FCF is simply unaware or intentionally misleading people.

Daniel shared, “We faced some issues on how to communicate FCF’s purpose in the clearest way possible on social media without causing confusion”.

Damage Control

All this negative press resulted in a series of tweets from FCF, trying to rectify what Daniel referred to as “conspiracy theories.”

The foundation claimed in their now-deleted tweets that all their staff has divested themselves of involvement with any business, including those in Otaku Pin Club and Loot Crate. Their official statements maintained that any data collected is anonymous and will only be used to create publicly available research papers and will not be sold.

Daniel added, “Our staff has agreed to volunteer, without compensation, until the non-profit has demonstrated sustainability and acceptance from the community.”

When asked directly about socialanigirl’s article, Daniel shared, “The author… and I actually connected earlier today to talk about the article. I found her article to be thoughtful and well-articulated.” This was followed the next day by an official response on their twitter.

In the response, FCF hoped that being registered and thoroughly reviewed by the IRS will dispel any fears of overlap and conflict of interest.

“To be quite honest, our team is small, and we have made plenty of mistakes along the way” Daniel confessed. “FCF is not a perfect organization, but we are committed to growing and learning with the community.”

Nobody knew at the time that FCF was only a week away from shutting down.

The Beginning of the End

The talk with socialanigirl probably didn’t pan out as FCF expected. Just a few days after our email exchange with Daniel, socialanigirl released another article, “The Concealment and Lies Behind the Flying Colors Foundation: Further Revelations.”

In it, socialanigirl notes several shady and potentially illegal actions taken by FCF, whether willfully or unintentionally. Some of the noted “lies” include:

  • Having more employed individuals than publicly known (including a potentially illegal unpaid intern)
  • The staff claiming to have no more connections with Otaku Pin Club while some still have admin privileges on the OPC Discord server
  • They considered the possibility of charging Japanese clients for a more in-depth analysis of the gathered data. They also did not represent themselves as a non-profit with these clients
  • The survey management tool they used collected IP addresses despite FCF themselves stating that no personal data will be gathered
  • Despite claiming to have not paid influencers, they paid Digibro $100 for their first consultation

The strong reactions to this article did not look good for FCF and, in hindsight, foretold their demise.

Down for the Count

The blows to the Flying Colors Foundation did not slow down one bit. Gigguk started to distance himself from the foundation and even The Anime Man deleted his video promoting the 2018 Anime Census as revelations about FCF came to light.

On March 28, almost two weeks since their official March 15 launch, FCF published a farewell letter on their website. In the letter, they said “Our decision [to close down was] made to ensure that the community feels safe and at ease. Our intentions and purpose was always good, and we apologize for not being able to communicate that as clearly as possible.”

And that was the life and death of Flying Colors Foundation. Whether they were intentionally trying to scam the anime community and using the influencers for their own gain or they were just inexperienced and made a lot of avoidable mistakes, we can’t really tell. FCF seemed genuinely hopeful at the beginning just a couple of weeks ago, and now they’ve shut down, leaving us with more questions than before.

12 Fun Things You Can Do Online This Summer So You Never Have to Leave the House

$

Summer is a beautiful time of year to stay inside so you can avoid the allergies, sunburns, and every protagonist’s mortal enemy: trucks.

Make this summer great by staying home, cranking up your A/C unit to max cool, stocking up on snacks, and enjoying the vast bounty of awesome and strange that the Internet has to offer.

Start the long adventure with One Piece

One Piece

One Piece has sold over 430 million copies and has over 845 anime episodes. It’s a gargantuan epic that merges pirates, superpowers, talking fish, crazy battles, and loveable characters that have kept this series alive for years. If you haven’t watched this series, no time like summer to begin the journey. You may be able to emerge from your house by the end of the year if you’re a fast reader or give up on sleep.

Advance your Japanese skills

Japanese Apps

Imagine being able to watch anime without subtitles – you could fully appreciate all the sakuga and beautiful animation that the studios have labored over. There are of course a million more reasons to learn a new language (like it literally improves your brain, it’s useful if you visit Japan, and you could message your favorite creators on Twitter) and you’re just a few clicks away from your first lesson. There are lots of paid services for learning Japanese but some free resources to get your feet wet are Duolingo, TofuguJisho, and more.

Discover doujinshi and choose your favorite ships

Doujinshi or doujin (同人誌) are self-published works like manga, books, or magazines. While the content is made by amateurs usually, the level of talent can often be pro-level! And probably the number one reason why so many people read, collect, and follow doujinshi is because these amateur authors often create alternate stories for popular ships. If you fell in love with Eren x Levi in Attack on Titan or Rem x Subaru in Re:Zero there’s a doujin for it. And yes, a large portion of doujin are 18+, yaoi or yuri, and are sold in Japan with paper over the cover because fans get dirty when they can create their fantasy ship.

Start to live your real anime life on VR chat

Do you know de wae? Because the Internet sure did when this startup launched their new service and Sanic started to take over every meme video for a few weeks. Behind the Sanic memes is a solid community of anime fans to love to take on the look of their favorite character and get into some mischief, like loli knife fights.

Play Final Fantasy games starting with the original

Final Fantasy

Like One Piece, the Final Fantasy game series keeps getting new content for a reason. The music, gameplay, worldbuilding, and heart-rending stories are legendary. You can really appreciate the series if you play through the series from the start to see the evolution in graphics and gameplay. The earlier games have been released in new formats and on new platforms, including even phones and tablets.

“Train” for the naughtiest E-Sports league

E-sports has grown to be a million dollar industry with huge cash prizes and rewards. YouPorn, the company behind the esports Team YP, has decided to put up $25,000 for Nutaku’s Eroge E-Sports Tournament. 64 players will compete playing the new game, TnT or Tits and Tanks, and have a great excuse all summer for why they’re spending all day alone in their room.

Fall into figure collecting

Oreimo Kuroneko Figure

Say hello to your new waifu or husbando and goodbye to ever paying back your student loans! Figure collecting is addictive with new characters, poses, and outfits being released every season. GoodSmile will punish you will adorable figures you can’t resist. But on the plus side, you could take some next level figure photography with your new treasures. Good luck trying to avoid bootlegs!

Revamp your wardrobe with anime inspiration

Thanks to online shopping, you don’t have to drag yourself to the mall and fight to find parking. You can comparison shop your way to designing a million closet cosplays based on the anime you’re currently into. Polyvore used to be king for style mood boards but after it’s closure, now ShopLook and Japan’s iqon will be your go-to solution.

Refine your cooking skills by remaking food from Shokugeki no Soma

Who needs cooking schools when you have all of YouTube to teach you? Throw on some knife skill tutorials by Gordan Ramsey and learn how to love vegetables with Jaques Pepin and sooner then you’d think, you’ll be able to take on some Shokugeki no Soma dishes. Or at least make some high-level instant ramen!

Start your voice acting career by joining indie animation and games

Sure, we can’t all fly to Japan to become an anime voice actor but it’s still fun to voice some indie projects. Learning to find character voices can start with impressions and practicing from scripts of your favorite anime or games. It can be embarrassing as your voice cracks when your practice doing an anime loli voice so it’s the perfect summer activity to do in your room alone (or in your closet if worried others will hear). There are plenty of sites to find friends, feedback, or try to snag a part in a game or animation.

Find your fetish on Fakku

FAKKU x MOGRO

Fakku is a cornerstone of the hentai community and is a great place to explore your darker desires (and even hosts a few events in the outside world). It’s changed in recent years when it became a paid service but has a growing community of supportive of lewd lovers who accept you regardless of if you’re looking for yuri spider monster NTR with knee-high socks or just some plain vanilla fun that ends with cuddles.

Read the light novel of your favorite series

It’s no secret that many anime are adaptations of manga and light novels, but many fans who have fallen in love with series like No Game, No Life or Spice & Wolf don’t realize that the story continues! Light novels actually have a huge advantage over anime that will please any super fan. The novels aren’t constrained to 20+ minute time blocks on TV so they can tell the story without having to rush. They’re often rich in backstory, side characters, and allow fans to really experience the full breadth of the fantasy world. You can use the Yen Press website to find many of the popular series and where to find them.

So this is where we are now.

Atlas One on Twitter noticed that Nintendo’s stock went up from 44.64 to 46.61. This sudden jump is even bigger than the increase after the last Nintendo Direct. Bowsette’s hashtag is even the #1 trend on Twitter in Japan.

Nintendo Stock Price

There might be other factors in play as well, like the Switch’s online functionality launching without any major issues and the announcement of a Fornite bundle, but most of the fanbase is attributing this change to everyone’s favorite turtle princess.

Shigeru Miyamoto screaming at Bowsette

Hopefully this convinces Nintendo to finally make her canon!
